March 28th, 2019 – Respect Your Cat Day

While, the staff here at Torbay Road Animal Hospital, are positive you treat your cat with respect every day – there is a special holiday to honour our feline friends! March 28th, 2019 is Respect Your Cat Day!

On this special day, you should be sure to give your cat or cats a lot of extra love and attention. It might mean giving your cat a few extra treats and a few extra chin rubs. There are plenty of ways to respect your cat.

However, while these are all great ways to honour your cat, respecting your cat goes much further. If you want to appreciate your cat fully, you have to know how to take care of them properly and how they would like to be treated, handled and held. Innocent things such as feeding your cat too much food, holding your cat in a way that makes them feel unsafe, and even petting your cat in a way that annoys them can come across as disrespectful to cats.

The following are some tips to help improve your relationship with your cat and truly let them know how much you love and respect them!

Petting you Cat – Petting your cat may seem like an easy task, but it all depends on what type of mood your cat is in. Cats can be complicated, so it is always good to know where and when to pet them! It is a fantastic tip, especially for children. Cats love it best when you rub their heads or neck! It can be best to stay away from the belly area! All cats are different in where they like to be touched? What does your cat love?

Hold to Hold a Cat – It is always best to hold a cat as tight to your body as you can. The more they feel secure and not feel like they are going to fall the better ! While, this will work for most cats, some cats don’t like to be held! Try to snuggle, but if it is something they aren’t comfortable with – don’t force something they won’t enjoy!

Brushing your Cat’s Coat – Brushing your cat is a significant part of your cat’s care. It keeps their coat healthy and shiny thus maintaining your cat’s health. It is especially important for long-haired cats. They can develop problems with knots and mats, so it is very important to brush them on a daily basis so this doesn’t happen.

Feeding Your Cat – “How much do I feed my Cat” is a very common question that cat owners tend to ask us! Just like humans, all cat’s do not require the same diet or amount. It will depend on your cat’s metabolism, lifestyle, activity level and if they have any medical conditions to be considered. If you have any questions about feeding your cat – please do not hesitate to ask any of us here at the clinic! We are more than happy to help!

Nail Trims – Keeping your cat’s nails trimmed is another important part of keeping your cat healthy, especially indoor cats. Indoor cats may have problems if their nails get too long. They can get their nails stuck on the carpet and then tear them off. Other problems can occur if the nail grows too long and curves into the pad, potentially causing an infection. If you not comfortable trimming your cat’s nails yourself, give us a call at the clinic, and we can take care of it for you!

Keeping your Cat Entertained – A lot of people get cats because they are less maintenance than dogs. However, that doesn’t mean you can ignore them. Cats need a lot of attention just like any other pet. If you are busy throughout the day, some great toys can keep your cat’s attention. Ask us for advice!
