January 29th: Change A Pets Life Day!

Changing a pets life may be easier than you think. Of course, adoption is the first idea that comes to mind when we think of changing a pets life, but there are other things you can do to enrich their lives.

Changing a pet’s diet to help improve their quality of life can have a huge impact on your pet. Pets that suffer from food allergies, or sensitivities, may have some health concerns when eating particular diets. Changing their food to something of a higher quality or with different ingredients can often have a huge impact on these health concerns. If you suspect that your pet may have food sensitivities or allergies, it is a good idea to talk with your veterinary team to help point you in the right direction to help relieve your pet of these symptoms.

Socialization and training. It is very important for your pet, especially dogs, to be well socialized. Dogs are social animals and need stimulation from others. They need to be able to interact with other dogs and know social queues from them. They also need to learn what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour when interacting with people. A pet that has been well socialized will be more confident and better behaved overall.

Exercise and mental stimulation. Walking your dog or playing games of “cat and mouse” are great ways to stimulate your pet, and enhance the bond between you. Pets need play to burn off excess energy, help build bonds, and to feel more confident. There is a wide variety of puzzle toys for pets out there today, ranging from treat tumblers to mechanical mice for your pets to catch.

Of course, if you ever have any questions about how to enrich a pets life, a veterinary team member is always willing to help! Alternatively, stores such as Petsmart, Pet Zone or Critters ‘N Things have staff that is full of information on the latest toys for your pet.
